A Number on the Wall Is Only the First Step
Every haze season, my LinkedIn feed fills up with the same thing.
A photo of an air monitor. A big red PM2.5 number. A caption about how bad the air is.
That is a good first step. Measuring tells you where you stand.
But in most of these posts, I never see the next step. No plan. No fix. No second photo with a new number.
I am not knocking anyone for measuring. Measuring is smart. This post is about what comes after.
What a Monitor Can and Cannot Do
A fuel gauge tells you the tank is empty. It does not put any petrol in.
An air monitor works the same way. It gives you a number. It does not change the air.
Why Plans Go Quiet After the Number
Measuring is easy. It asks very little of you. Buy a device, put it up, take a photo.
Fixing is harder. It needs a decision, a sign-off and a budget. Someone has to say yes.
That is the point where a lot of good plans go quiet. It happens everywhere, and it can happen to any of us.
We measure for clients too. We have seen the number land, and then the room go quiet. That is why I wrote this.
Here is a simple test. When the number is bad, who decides what happens next? If you cannot name that person, the number has nowhere to go.
What To Do After You Get the Number
If you run a commercial building, here is the plan I would follow.
- NAME one person who owns the fix. One name, not a committee.
- FIND where the bad air is coming from. Outside air, a leak, a dirty filter, a crowded room with poor airflow.
- CHECK the filters in your air handling units. Are they the right grade? Fitted properly? Changed on time?
- LOOK at your fresh-air intakes, doors and gaps. During haze, outside air walks in wherever it can.
- FIX the basics first. Seals, filters and airflow.
- ADD air treatment that suits your building. Ask for the test reports. Ask what was tested, in what room, and for how long.
- MEASURE again. Same spot, same way. Compare it with your first number.
- KEEP checking. Your air changes every day, so one reading is never the full picture.
Wrong
Post the number. Add a complaint. Stop there.
Right
Post the number. Say what you changed. Post the new number.
Measure, Act, Then Measure Again
A monitor is the start and the finish check. The fix sits in the middle.
That is how we think about it at PurAire Singapore. The number matters, but only because it tells you what to do next.
It is also why we like monitors that connect to the system. With our partner Keiterra, an induct monitor can adjust the output of a PurAire ioniser automatically. The system responds to the room. Nobody has to remember to do it.
One Question to Ask Next Time
Next time you see a red number on a wall, ask one thing: what happens next?
A good answer has a name, a plan and a date. That is what turns a number into a result.
If you manage a commercial building and you already have the number, we are happy to talk through the next step with you.
