Your Building’s Air Is Either Working For Your People — Or Against Them

15/6/2026

Read how bipolar ionisation — and the data from real Singapore installations — is transforming indoor air quality, human cognitive performance, and commercial building management
Walk into an office that has been closed over the weekend. You know that feeling — heavy, stale, slightly airless. The aircon has been running, but the air does not feel right. It feels used.

Now walk into a hotel room where the previous guest was a smoker. The smell is in the curtains, the carpet, the pillow. A cleaning spray briefly masks what you smell. It does not change what you breathe.

These are not aesthetic problems. They are indoor air quality problems with measurable consequences — for hotel revenue, guest satisfaction, staff health, and — as a growing body of peer-reviewed science confirms — occupant cognitive performance.

The Science Most People Have Not Heard

             Peer Reviewed Published Research
Indoor air quality research has long focused on what polluted air does to human health. What is less widely known is what genuinely clean, ion-rich air actively does for human performance — and the science on this point is both substantial and consistent.

                           Your brain works better:

• Hawkins LH (1981), Journal of Environmental Psychology: A rigorous 12-week double-blind crossover study of 106 office workers found that ion-enriched air produced significantly higher alertness, atmospheric freshness, and overall wellbeing — and reduced the overall complaint rate by 50% [1]

• Guo et al. (2023), Indoor Air (Wiley): A controlled study found measurable improvement in cognitive performance and health outcomes when negative ion concentrations were increased in a high-CO₂ indoor environment [3]

Your mood, energy, and stress resilience improve:

• Krueger AP & Reed EJ (1976), Science: This landmark study established that atmospheric ions regulate the metabolism of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) in the blood — the biochemical mechanism that explains improved mood, reduced fatigue, and mental clarity in ion-rich outdoor environments such as forests, coastlines, and mountains [2]

• The same study documented that ions stimulate the ciliary beat frequency of the mucociliary escalator — the respiratory tract’s self-cleaning mechanism — enabling more efficient clearance of inhaled pollutants and reducing the biological burden on the respiratory system [2]

The definitive safety and benefit verdict
                       from independent science:

• Jiang SY, Ma A & Ramachandran S (2018), International Journal of Molecular Sciences — Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory, National University of Singapore: A systematic review of 100 years of NAI research across three major scientific databases concluded that NAIs are credited with increasing psychological health, productivity, and overall wellbeing. No evidence of harm to humans, animals, or plant life was identified. [5]

• Alexander DD et al. (2013), Journal of Negative Results in BioMedicine: A 60-year comprehensive review concluded that the literature does not provide reliable evidence of negative effects on pulmonary, respiratory, or metabolic function [6]

Peer-reviewed research has found no evidence that air ionisation harms humans. To the contrary, published studies show that negative ions actively benefit human memory, cognition, and mental alertness. Our certified products produce only ions — not ozone, not reactive byproducts. The science and the certification together confirm the technology and our products are not only safe — they are actively beneficial.

Why Bipolar Is the Gold Standard — Not Just Any Ioniser

Not all ionisation is equal. This distinction matters enormously for any building owner or facilities manager evaluating IAQ solutions.

Clean outdoor air at a beach, on a mountaintop, or near a waterfall is naturally bipolar — a balanced mixture of both positive and negative oxygen ions.

Peer-reviewed research published in ASHRAE Journal documents that naturally occurring ion levels in these environments measure between 3,000 and 21,000 ions per cubic centimetre in both polarities. This is the electrical atmosphere the human body evolved in.

• Schurk DN (2021), ASHRAE Journal (peer-reviewed, November 2021): Urban environments progressively deplete available ions. Inside buildings, ion levels are further diminished as remaining ions are absorbed by contaminated air. Bipolar ionisation artificially replenishes indoor ion concentrations to levels consistent with clean outdoor air — restoring the natural balance the human body expects [4]

Earlier ionisation technologies used only negative ions. PurAire’s Glass DBD Bipolar Ionisation generates both positive and negative oxygen ions simultaneously — mirroring the natural charge-neutral balance of clean outdoor air. This is why our technology is called bipolar. And why it outperforms single-polarity alternatives in real-world occupied commercial spaces.

What the Atmocube Reveals — and What We Do About It

You cannot improve what you have not measured.

The Atmocube IAQ Monitor — a WELL-certified real-time device that PurAire supplies alongside our ionisation systems — measures 12 parameters including CO₂, PM2.5, VOCs, temperature, and humidity, giving facilities managers a live picture of what occupants are actually breathing.

A recent Atmocube deployment in a mid-sized Singapore office the facilities team considered “fine” revealed:

• CO₂ at 2pm in the main open-plan area: 1,680 ppm — above the threshold where cognitive performance measurably declines
• VOCs still elevated three weeks after renovation from carpet adhesive
• PM2.5 consistently above WHO guidelines during peak traffic hours

Nobody had complained. Nobody felt acutely unwell. But the data showed air quietly working against every person in that space, every afternoon. The 3pm fatigue those workers attributed to post-lunch energy dips was, at least in part, an indoor air quality problem.

For ozone measurement, PurAire uses the Aeroqual S500 with a dedicated ozone sensor — the same professional-grade instrument used by Singapore’s NEA and the US EPA. Not an estimate. The regulatory standard, applied directly in your building.

The most costly indoor air quality problems are the ones nobody notices — until you measure them.

What Bipolar Ionisation Does to Your Air

PurAire’s Glass DBD Bipolar Ionisation floods your indoor space with positive and negative oxygen ions. Unlike passive filtration, these ions travel out into the room and neutralise pollutants where they are:

The Hotel Room Problem — Where IAQ Directly Costs Money

A smoking room that takes 8-12 hours to turn over costs money every day.

A PurAire portable ioniser running for 60-90 minutes with the aircon operating neutralises tobacco odour at the molecular level. The room goes back into sellable inventory faster. The next guest does not call the front desk.

Hotels using PurAire ionisers consistently report faster room turnarounds, fewer odour complaints, fewer room change requests, and positive guest comments about air freshness in rooms that previously had recurring issues.

The fastest ROI in hotel facilities is not a renovation. It is putting a room back into inventory 90 minutes sooner, every single day.

Scale: From a Single Toilet to an Entire Building

Air quality problems in commercial buildings are not single-room problems. They are building-wide challenges that require building-wide solutions.

PurAire offers the only bipolar ionisation range in Singapore that scales from a toilet cubicle to a 30,000 CFM commercial AHU on one consistent technology platform:

One technology. Every scale. One building, fully covered. Only by PurAire Singapore

These Organisations Have Already Decided to use Bipolar Ionisation:

• Google — Various sites in Singapore, Chicago and San Jose
• Bloomberg — global offices, documented in published sustainability reports
• Apple, Meta, and dozens of Fortune 500 companies across three continents
• Johns Hopkins Hospital, Children’s Hospital Boston, University of Maryland Medical Center, Rush Medical Center Chicago, New York University Hospital
• Changi, LaGuardia, O’Hare, LAX, and San Francisco International Airport

....and hundreds of others across Singapore and worldwide.

These are organisations with facilities engineers, legal departments, and health and safety teams who vetted this technology rigorously before deploying it in occupied spaces. Their long-term commitment is itself a form of validation.

PurAire’s Measurement-First Commitment

Every PurAire commercial engagement begins with measurement, not a pitch.

The Atmocube establishes your baseline IAQ across CO₂, PM2.5, and VOCs. The Aeroqual S500 verifies ozone to NEA and EPA standards. We identify the specific challenges in your specific spaces. We install the appropriate solution at the right scale. We measure again.

Clean air is not a feeling or a claim. It is a number. And it should be verifiable by anyone, with any calibrated instrument, at any time.

If you are ready for a measurement-first conversation about your building’s indoor air — one space or the whole building — we are ready to begin.

Your air should be working for your people.
                           We make sure it is.
